Vu T. Dang is chief of staff and interim chief operating officer at the DC Department of Behavioral Health. Previously, he served assistant deputy mayor for the Department of Health, Human Services, Education and Youth and chief service officer for the city of Baltimore. Prior to his service in local government, Vu was executive director of the International Rescue Committee’s Washington, DC regional office, an assistant director or at The Carter Center, and a consultant to developing country governments and international organizations on poverty reduction policies and health, education and community development issues. He began his career as a national service volunteer, serving with Peace Corps in Guinea, West Africa, where he founded a pre-K and elementary school, and AmeriCorps, where he taught language arts as a Teach For America corps member in the Seattle public schools. Vu arrived in the US as part of a refugee program and was raised in a Vietnamese-speaking home. A beneficiary of integrated public schools and public assistance, Vu holds a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a B.A. in political science from University of Houston.
